HAFLINGER

History:
The Tractor of the Alps. The origin of this unique breed of small horse is the Tyrolean mountain region. It developed over several hundred years. It served the peasant farmers for everything from transportation, to plowing the steep fields, packing heavy loads on very narrow paths, dragging logs, whatever was needed. It was essential that the horses kept in this harsh climate were very versatile, and yet gentle and willing, and survived on the scant pastures.

Since modern farm equipment, the Haflinger was not needed for its original purpose. It has become a horse noted for its versatility as a leisure breed. With the introduction of a little Arab blood long ago, the mountain farmers horse became the Haflinger of today. All-purpose family horse.

Characteristics:
Color is always chestnut, from honey blond, to dark chocolate. Manes and tails are usually long, thick and snow white or flaxen. Size ranges from 13 hands up to 14-3 hands, from 600 to 1300 pounds. The Haflinger is well muscled, with a powerful build, sturdy bone, and relatively large hooves. It has a long life span, up to 35 years old. Many are fertile well into their late 20's. In the Tyrol it is called " Prince in Front, Peasant in the Rear."

In North America Haflingers are being used for pleasure riding and driving, combined driving, eventing, dressage -ridden and driven, packing, farming, and always a family friend. In the Midwest it is often seen as a Draft Show pony. The Haflinger is well suited for harness work. Out of the show ring you can find them on the Amish farms plowing. Pound for pound they are stronger than large horses. Uniquely attractive and appealing, the Haflinger of today is a small horse. Large enough the adults, small enough for the children. Truly the next best breed! If you want a willing, gentle, family, all purpose horse, for home or show -- Consider the Haflinger !!!
